Stockwell quit her nonprofit job and, in 2017, started Stockwell Homes, which specializes in custom residential and commercial remodeling. The design-build firm is a certified remodeler and general contractor, taking clients through the entire process: architectural drawings, construction and interior design. “We pride ourselves that we don’t have a formula,” she says. “We see the world the way our clients see it. We try to understand their likes and dislikes and work to marry that with the architecture of the home … We want to help people live better in their homes.”
“I want to set a new level,” she says. “Even the playing field.” But making inroads in a male-dominated field like construction is an uphill battle. “It is hard being a woman in a male-dominated industry,” she says. “People assume you can be the designer.” That’s not where Stockwell thrives, though. She relies on other members of her team to handle the interior design. “I love the front end,” she says. “The generative piece. I’m not moved by curtains and pillows. I’m moved by ripping down walls.”

Expanding your Design Thinking: Re-Imagining the Kitchen Layout for a Modern Lifestyle
The one-size-fits-all kitchen has no place in modern homebuilding and design. This session explores the lifestyle trends and evolution of household life for Millennials and younger clients. For this rising demographic of luxury homebuilders, balancing a busy lifestyle with a rich home life is a top priority. And as designers, architects, and builders, it is only those willing to innovate who will be well-equipped to deliver the type of finished space this demographic seeks.

“When I saw a picture of a remodel Stockwell did on its website, I fell in love with the work.” The rest, as Tami puts it, was history.
Now, as the couple sip their coffee in the nearby sunroom, sitting beneath a Serena & Lily fixture and solid oak Duchateau ceiling treatment, Tami and Kara find themselves unable to pinpoint their favorite feature. Maybe it’s the fact their cherry wood is gone for good, but either way, Tami says “everything is perfect and beautiful.”

“Details like special ceiling and wall treatments gave this project the warmth and textural impact we were going for, while unique architectural lighting elements, such as floor lights and cove lighting, added to the ambiance. To bring it all together, Kara and Tami decided to revamp their beloved spiral staircase with a new white-oak handrail and treads, topping it off with a statement Visual Comfort light fixture.”
From passion project to stellar success, Jen Stockwell shares the story of Stockwell Homes
“Not only do we collaborate with each other well, we also collaborate with our clients, who often express their appreciation as not everyone operates in this way. We want to create spaces that not only suit our clients’ lifestyles but that also reflect their personalities and encompass their visions. We’re not led by our tastes and preferences, nor do we recreate the same look… We’ve created our own process as non-industry-insiders and we really want to make the process and decision-making as seamless as possible for both us and our clients.”
